Overview

The New York Public Library’s Department of Communications and Marketing seeks a Social Media Manager with a passion for the Library and its mission, a love for all things literary, and the ability to creatively engage the Library’s social media communities while also helping the Library reach new audiences. The Library is particularly interested in reaching young people and New Yorkers who are unfamiliar with our many services and programs. The Social Media Manager reports to the Director of Digital Communications.

The Manager will develop engaging social media content; coordinate digital campaigns and launches; share expertise and support branch social media coordinators; generate creative ideas and participate in brainstorming sessions; track results and the Library’s presence on social media, analyze data, and share results.

Applicants should have experience managing social media professionally (on behalf of an organization/brand), from brainstorming to planning to content creation to publishing, and they should be enthusiastic about writing, reading, and The New York Public Library and our patrons. This candidate will need to be able to work in a collaborative environment that includes working with and cultivating junior members of the team.

Flagship social media content for NYPL, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and more

Share social media best practices with colleagues
Show branch social media coordinators how to best reach patrons

NYPL’s collections and offerings and how to best engage followers with all the Library has to offer

Improve:
Engagement with flagship social media

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:

  • Schedule all content for NYPL’s flagship social media
  • Supporting branch social media coordinators in reaching patrons
  • Understand posting schedule and frequency

3 months, this person will:

  • Understand key NYPL offerings from the circulating and research collections
  • Understand which content performs best on each platform
  • Develop social media content ideas

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Advise colleagues on social media best practices
  • Generate and execute new social media content ideas
  • Measure performance of social media channels and make recommendations for new content and engagement opportunities

Responsibilities

  • Manage all flagship social media platforms for The New York Public Library
  • Write and curate inspiring content for campaigns that increase engagement with NYPL’s collections, reading recommendations, programs, and services
  • Schedule posts and manage the social media editorial calendar
  • Work closely with Blog Editor to generate new blog ideas
  • Set up and manage quizzes, contests, and other engagement activities
  • Generate reports and translate data into actionable insights that will inform editorial decisions and content tactics
  • Provide leadership to branch and division social media practitioners with daily social media content recommendations and training
  • Solve problems creatively, proactively, and thoughtfully
  • Coordinate cross-promotions and events with other cultural organizations
  • Support social media advertising campaigns
  • Stay on top of latest developments in social media

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least two to four years of work experience
  • Experience with using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for an organization/brand

Required Experience

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Experience with social media publishing and monitoring tools (e.g., SocialFlow, SproutSocial)
  • Experience tracking social media performance and developing reports
  • Knowledge of current social media trends and tools
  • Ability to adapt voice to various NYPL channels
  • Track record of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines
  • Experience in the publishing, library, or literary field preferred

Required Skills

  • Basic image resizing/editing a plus

Please Note: Effective August 2, 2021, absent a qualifying exception for medical or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
