Is this the right place to post a question to other social media managers with a business question I have?
Hello, I do limited social media for a few small businesses in New York City and the Hudson Valley, (upstate from NYC) a rural area. I have a couple non-profits, a small farm to table restaurant, a sheep farm, an indie clothing designer and one big famous park in the city. I really don’t know how this happened. I never set out to do social media. I barley (practically never) use it for myself, yet I’m still strangely fascinated by how it works. All my clients, except for the one bigger one, have limited interest in social media but know it’s kind of a necessary evil. I’m saying this here because I think its of interest to know that not everybody is jumping for joy when it’s time to post. lol I absolutely love small businesses and am definitely always interested in learning how to improve e-commerce sales. Looking forward to getting involved here. Thanks! ~ Michele
Hi there @michele.kelling! It’s great that you have so many different types of clients. I also find it super interesting that you don’t use social media for personal use that much. How do you find out about latest updates and information in the social media world? Do you subscribe to newsletter?
There are some clients that I have with my business that aren’t really interested in social media either, but know they need to have a presents. That’s why my business exists!
Regarding improving e-commerce sales, what is your current social media e-commerce strategy?
We are so grateful to have you in this amazing community!
Hello, thanks for saying hi! I definitely peruse instagram and mostly from the Central Park account which we follow a wide variety of accounts. Reading about other people’s events- everything from the Met Museum to a neighborhood walking club to a private cigar lounge on Billionaire’s Row in NYC - it’s all interesting and educational and inspiring to learn how they choose to get their message out. There’s a lot of creativity out there. I’ll find a small business here and there and just watch them from afar. And I listen to the news from outside of this country (for example public radio station in London or Dublin) for a calmer different angle on basic news. When I’m out in the world (irl) I look around and notice the happy people and figure out what just made them happy - is it because their food came quickly or they hear music or 2 seagulls were competing for 1 French fry - whatever. Those things are tells to me and either I can think of a way to make it relate to my message or just store it for later.
One newsletter I enjoy is The Daily Carnage from carney.co - they send out a lot of fun and useful info. I’ll find a young and enthusiastic blogger of sorts (I like @shinewithnatasha) and follow them.
As far as a STRATEGY for improving e-commerce sales - winging it. What can I say. That’s why they (don’t) pay me the big bucks! ha ha It’s all good. In reality I learn as I go. I was a hairdresser forever and now I do this because I had “opinions” to share about some friends businesses.
I feel pretty confident about the content I come up with and we have fun, it’s the consistency that is a killer. Distractions are REAL.
This is awesome! It’s great to know that their accounts are so active.
I will have to check out @shinewithnatasha!
Trial and error is what all of us social media peeps do. Just be careful that you aren’t just throwing stuff at the wall. You want to have a strategy in place so that the owners of the accounts are happy with what you are doing. I have ran into that problem once before. It truly does come back to the goals and objectives of the client.
Great you joined us @michele.kelling I love working with small businesses too! And I agree many of them only do social because they feel like they have to!
